Artist Statement

When fabric is rolled onto the clay it leaves a wonderful imprint. By using a variety of fabrics that have associations with people, places or events in my life I am pondering the many and varied influences that have shaped who I am, the family that I come from and that I have in turn created.

The complex layering of the imprinted clay fragments, which are enhanced by the addition of terra-sigallata, oxides and under-glaze colours, emphasizes the fragmentary nature of the memories and recollections with which I construct my families’ stories and gain my sense of identity.

The contrast of pattern and texture, colour and tone and of 'soft' and hard surfaces are a symbolic representation of the many different and often conflicting relationships within families
