'FORM UP'

A guide to hand building with Forms and Patterns
Picture
'Forms' and 'Patterns' are invaluable tools in my practice - helping to shape and support the clay as I'm working.

My hope is that by providing these workshops, together with the Ribs (with which to make the Forms) and the Patterns (with which to cut the clay slab to the correct size) you can begin the journey of developing and improving your hand building skills.

These workshops are specifically designed to teach the process of using Forms and Patterns to create objects. They do not include detailed information about, or demonstrations of, surface decoration techniques and they do not include information about glazes and glazing.

These workshops are suitable for all levels but results may differ depending on the level of prior knowledge and experience.

Access to either an electric wheel or a heavy duty banding wheel is required to make the Forms.

Each WORKSHOP has a digital component (Pre-recorded Tutorials, and links to patterns and notes) and a physical component (Rib/s) - each component must be purchased separately.

After purchase the WORKSHOP (digital component) will be available to download immediately.
A link to the Rib/s will available in the WORKSHOP. The Rib/s will be posted after purchasing.

What is a Rib?
The rib a shaped tool that is used to create the solid clay Form.

Can I use an electric wheel or a banding wheel to make the Form?
Yes - The ribs work effectively on either a banding wheel or an electric wheel as demonstrated in the videos. Choose the tutorial that suits your available equipment.

How long will each Form take to make?
Each Form will take approximately ½hr to 1hr to make.

How long does it take for the Form to dry?
Allow the Form to dry overnight or until leather hard before moving or lifting. The Form will then take 5 -7 days to dry completely (depending on the conditions in your studio).

How do I access the Patterns?
The Patterns can be printed directly from the workshop page via a link. Please read the notes provided in the workshop for more information about printing the Patterns.

When is the Form ready to use?
The Form is best used when bone dry but it can be used once hard leather-hard (I recommend covering with cling wrap during use to prevent damage to the surface).
*The Pattern provided is created to fit on the dry Form so some slight adaptation may be needed if using when leather hard.

Can I print the Instruction manual?
The written instructions for making the forms are included with each Workshop and can be printed via a link provided.

Do I need to fire the Form?
No it is not a requirement or a recommendation to fire the Form.

What is the Rib made from?
The Rib is made from PLA.

What is PLA?
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a popular, plant-based bioplastic made from fermented renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional oil-based plastics.

What are The Key Characteristics of PLA

Renewable Source: Derived from plants, not fossil fuels.
Biodegradable: Breaks down into lactic acid, CO2, and water, especially in commercial composting facilities.
Versatile: Can be used like conventional plastics but with a lower environmental footprint.
