Part 1 - Make the Form

In the following Tutorials you will learn how to make a Form on either an electric wheel or a banding wheel.

​PLEASE NOTE The Forms can be made on either an electric wheel or a banding wheel regardless of the shape of the rib. In these Tutorials I have demonstrated Rib 1 on an electric wheel and Rib 2 on a banding wheel.

Part 2 - Make the cup

​​Cut out the Pattern pieces​​ before you begin. A printed copy of the Pattern is included with the Rib. To download and print extra copies click on the button below. Ensure that your printer scale is set to 100%. After printing check the measurements are the same as those written on the Pattern. (There is more detailed information about printing in 'Slab Building Tips'). 
Fired cup size is approximately
H:7cm/2.7 inches D:10cm/3.9 inches V:​250ml/10fl oz

Handle 'mini' Tutorial

I've included this Handle Tutorial as a seperate video so you can easily refer to it. When  working with clay slabs, being conscious of, and monitoring, the moisture content of the clay is very important. When the clay is soft (high moisture content) it is easy to roll out, cut and bend into a shape.  As it dries (lower moisture content) it becomes less flexible but much stronger and less likely to distort.  Using these different states is crucial in making a handle. 
A handle pattern is included on the printable Pattern (see above) but feel free to experiment with different shapes and methods of making handles as this is a good way to add your own personality to a cup. ​​ ​

FAQ

What is a Rib?
The rib is used to create the solid clay Form.

Can I use an electric wheel or a banding wheel to make the form?
Yes - The ribs work effectively on either a banding wheel or an electric wheel as demonstrated in the videos. Choose the tutorial that suits your available equipment.

How long will each Form take to make?
Each Form will take approximately ½hr to 1hr to make.

How long does it take for the Form to dry?
Allow the Form to dry overnight or until leather hard before moving or lifting. The Form will take 5 -7 days to dry completely (depending on the conditions in your studio). 

Should I cover the Form with cling-wrap before beginning?
Cling-wrap can protect the Form from damage (from slip and scoring)and prevent the item being made sticking onto the Form. Covering the Form with cling-wrap can also prevent the item being made from drying too quickly. However if it's a cold day and/or the slab is too wet/floppy, the absorbancy of the Form can help with drying out/stiffening the slab, making it easier to work with. The decision to cover the Form with cling-wrap or not therefore depends on the circumstances. At any stage during the making process the Form can be covered with cling-wrap if this is deemed necessary.

Can the pattern be printed?
Yes the Patterns can printed. Make sure the printer is set to scale at 100%. More information is provided in 'Slab Building Tips'

When is the Form ready to use?
The Form is best used when bone dry but it can be used once hard leather-hard (I recommend covering with cling wrap during use to prevent damage to the surface).
*The Pattern provided is created to fit on the dry Form so some slight adaptation may be needed if using when leather hard.

Can the Instructions be printed?
The written instructions for making the Forms and 'Slab Building Tips' can be printed.

Do I need to fire the Form?
No it is not a requirement or a recommendation to fire the Form.

What is the Rib made from?
The Rib is made from PLA.

​What is PLA? 
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a popular, plant-based bioplastic made from fermented renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional oil-based plastics. 

What are The Key Characteristics of PLA
Renewable Source: Derived from plants, not fossil fuels.
Biodegradable: Breaks down into lactic acid, CO2, and water, especially in commercial composting facilities.
Versatile: Can be used like conventional plastics but with a lower environmental footprint.
