My Inspiration

My work is an intertwining of ceramics and hand stitching. The inspiration behind this fusion was the inheritance of a treasured collection of hand-stitched textiles crafted by women in my family, including my mother. These fabrics resonated deeply with me, connecting me to the hands that lovingly fashioned them. Each one tells a multitude of stories, some familiar and others left to my imagination.
In my practice I try to harmoniously blend the two disciplines of ceramics and stitching. You could say, that while clay is my passion stitching is what gives me my purpose. 

My Process

My process begins with the creation of small hand-stitched 'samplers' where I explore pattern and line using the simple stitches found in my inherited fabrics. An embossing tile is then made by rolling the sampler onto a clay slab. After bisque firing the tile, a soft clay slab is pressed onto the tile, embossing the design onto the clay slab. The slab is then used to construct a vessel.
Developing and exploring this process is a key part of my practice. Details such as the texture of a fabric or the thickness of a thread, the way in which a clay slab is folded or an oxide is brushed over a textured surface are all considered and investigated.  
This way of working takes time but brings me a great deal of satisfaction.  No two objects are ever exactly the same as my aim is not to create uniformity but rather for my work to express a story and reflect the hands and the ideas of the maker.

My Story

Following school I completed a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in Printmaking, at the University of Cape Town. I enjoyed many aspects of printmaking but always felt a desire to work three dimensionally. An opportunity to study ceramics arose when I moved to London with my husband in 1996 and this sowed the seeds of my continuing love affair with clay. After briefly returning to live in Zimbabwe, circumstances arose that saw us emigrate to Australia. I was fortunate to be able to continue studying ceramics at Tafe NSW while juggling motherhood and settling into a new country and have since completed a Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics. I now work from my own studio in Sydney where I enjoy making small, curated collections of functional ceramics for exhibitions and for sale in my online store. Teaching workshops (in person and online) and working collaboratively with other artists has provided the opportunity to expand my arts practice and to connect to a wonderful creative community.
